The Dr. and Mrs. Gary Brummer Colloquium Series in Psychology Presents “Parent Perspectives on PBIS: Understanding the Home - School Connection in Child Development” with Dr. Jennifer Washburn
MURRAY, Ky. – The Department of Psychology at 鶹Ƶ is pleased to host its fall event in the Dr. and Mrs. Gary Brummer Colloquium Series on Monday, Oct. 20, at 5:30 p.m. in Wrather Auditorium on the Murray State campus.
Dr. Jennifer Washburn will speak on “Parent Perspectives on Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS): Understanding the Home - School Connection in Child Development.” The event is free and open to the public.
How do parents experience school behavior systems, and what happens when home and school expectations don’t match? In this talk, Washburn shares insights from her research on PBIS, exploring how parent–school collaboration can improve children’s social and emotional development.
This presentation shares findings from a qualitative study exploring mothers’ experiences of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports in elementary schools. The research highlights how alignment—or misalignment—between parenting practices and school behavior systems influences children’s social and behavioral development. The talk emphasizes themes of equilibrium, disequilibrium, communication and desired changes, providing practical insights for educators, parents and policymakers.
Washburn is the founder and executive director of iKids Childhood Enrichment Center in Benton, Kentucky. A doctoral-level developmental psychologist and nationally recognized advocate for early childhood education, she brings more than 25 years of experience as a teacher, researcher and policy leader.
“Murray State’s Department of Psychology and its friends and alumni look forward to the Brummer Colloquium each fall and spring semester,” said Dr. Becky Nastally, assistant professor of psychology and member of the Brummer Colloquium committee. “We invite innovative researchers with some tie to our discipline that are doing socially relevant work, and this fall we are excited to have Dr. Jennifer Washburn. Her research focuses on connecting school professionals and parents to provide better social, emotional and behavioral intervention in public schools which is vital for all students.”
